Salesforce Email Limits Overview

Salesforce have their own servers to allow users to send emails from within the Salesforce Application. This makes it easier for a user who is on a record e.g. Account or Contact, to quickly send an email through Salesforce without leaving the browser.

However, since Salesforce is a multitenant environment i.e. all its customers share resources, there are certain limits that apply to sending emails from Salesforce. We have written about the types of emails that can be sent through Salesforce, as well as the limitations that apply to them, below.

Types of Email Limits

It is important to know what limitations apply to your Salesforce license before you send email from Salesforce.

As a general limit, maximum email messages processed by Salesforce per day using services like Email to Case, is equal to the number of user licenses multiplied by 1000. So if your org has 50 users then the daily email limit for Salesforce email services for the entire org will be 50 x 1000 = 50,000.

However, there is an upper limit of 1,000,000 that cannot be surpassed.

Let’s dive into the other limits to specific categories of emails in Salesforce:

1. Automated Single Emails

Single Emails that are sent automatically through Apex, including triggers, classes, and buttons are categorized as Single Email Message.

Limit: 5,000

Note: You can send mass email to a maximum of 5,000 external email addresses per day per licensed Salesforce org.

2. Manual Single Emails

Single emails sent using the email author or composer in Salesforce don’t count toward any limit. There’s no limit on sending single emails to contacts, leads, person accounts, and users in your org directly from the Account, Contact, Lead, Opportunity, Case, Campaign, or custom object pages.

Limit: No Limit

3. Automated Mass Emails

Mass Emails that are sent automatically through Apex, including triggers, classes, and buttons are categorized as Mass Email Messages.

Limit: 5,000

Note: You can send mass email to a maximum of 5,000 external email addresses per day per licensed Salesforce org.

4. Manual Mass Emails

Mass Emails that are sent through the “Mass Email Contacts” or “Mass Email Leads” function through the user interface or Setup menu, plus any emails sent through the “Send List Email” option in the user interface are categorized as Mass Email Messages.

Limit: 5,000

Note: You can send an unlimited amount of email through the UI to your org’s internal users.

Also Note: You can send mass email to a maximum of 5,000 external email addresses per day per licensed Salesforce org.

5. System Emails

Emails sent through the System eg. Password Reset Emails, Welcome Emails do not count against the limit.

Limit: No Limit

Conclusion

If your Salesforce Org reaches its daily email limit, all subsequent emails will fail to send. In order to deliver subsequent emails, the emails must be re-sent after the email limit is refreshed at midnight GMT the following day.

Remember, all Single and Mass Emails sent automatically all count towards a daily limit of 5000 emails.
